GP/GI

GP/GI steel, standing for galvanized plain/galvanized iron steel, is carbon steel coated with a thin layer of zinc, providing excellent corrosion resistance. It inherits high strength and good formability from the steel base, while remaining more cost-effective than other corrosion-resistant steels. Weldable and machinable, it finds widespread use in construction, automotive, appliances, and other weather-resistant applications. The galvanizing process involves cleaning the steel, dipping it in a molten zinc bath to create a metallurgical bond, and forming a protective zinc oxide/zinc carbonate layer through zinc-oxygen reactions. Common standards include ASTM A653, EN 10346, and IS 277, with grades classified by minimum yield strength and coating weight.
