Colour coated sheet might sound quite technical, but in simple terms it means the steel that has been coated by a protective and attractive layer to ensure that it is stronger and more appealing. It is found everywhere, be it the roofs over our heads or in our homes or in appliances. Over the past two years, however, coil coaters and resin manufacturers have rewritten the playbook quietly. Today, colour coated steel is smarter, uses less energy, performs better in the field, and it is more easily specified to achieve performance results.
Steel is powerful yet it possesses one flaw and that is it can rust once it encounters water and air in the long run. To eliminate this, manufacturers use special coatings. These coatings safeguard steel in two ways. The former is barrier protection, which creates a shield around the steel thus preventing the air and water from reaching its surface. The second is cathodic protection. Here, metal like zinc is corroded initially so that the steel underlying them is not damaged. This is because zinc-based coatings are so effective due to this self-healing property.
Here’s a quick guide on various types of colour coated steel.
One of the most frequent ones would be PPGI (Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron). It is made of zinc-coated steel and then it is topped with a layer of paint to provide colour and beauty. PPGI has found extensive applications in roofing sheets, wall panels and even in household appliances.

The other type is PPGL (Pre-Painted Galvalume). PPGL also uses zinc, aluminum, and silicon instead of pure zinc. This combination makes it stronger in adverse conditions, especially in coastal areas where corrosion is the greatest issue.

ZAM (Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium) is one of the more recent and advanced ones. ZAM offers enhanced resistance to corrosion by incorporation of magnesium with the zinc-aluminum mixture. This suits well for those who desire a high level of durability at a minimum maintenance cost.

Polyesters are still the workhorse, but Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP), High-Durability Polyester (HDP), and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) packages keep improving weatherability and chalk/fade resistance. Suppliers also now blend IR-reflective pigments to reduce surface temperatures without restricting colour choice.
India angle: With heat action plans expanding, states like Telangana have a formal Cool Roof Policy that targets large areas of reflective roofs through 2028 - 29, spec-friendly proof that SRI/TSR isn’t just marketing.
Price can be the most important factor in making the purchase, however, colour coated steel is not always the cheapest to choose. Thinner sheets and coverings can be less expensive initially, but will wear out faster, which will increase the cost of replacement. Contrarily, some products such as PPGL or ZAM can be expensive in the short term but much more protective and are more economical in the long run. One of the best alternatives is to strike a balance between budget and environment where steel will be utilized.
Different areas do not require a similar kind of steel. Basic PPGI is not a good option compared to PPGL or ZAM in coastal regions where the salty air accelerates the corrosion rate. Greater safety is offered in industrial belts where there is high pollution, through high-tech coating. In the meantime, in arid rural locations, even PPGI can still work over several years. The appropriate steel at the appropriate location is the ultimate key.
